A reading with South African authors Sabata-mpho Mokae and Gontse Wa Chaane

Sabata-mpho Mokae writes in English and Setswana (a southern African language). He is the author of a biography The Story of Sol T Plaatje, a youth novella Dikeledi [Tears] and a poetry collection Escaping Trauma. His first novel, Ga Ke Modisa [I’m Not My Brother’s Keeper] won the M-Net Literary Award for Best Novel in Setswana as well as the M-Net Film Award in 2013. The same book has since been prescribed as study material by the North West University as well as the Central University of Technology. Mokae also won the South African Literary Award in 2011. His short story Down Sol Plaatje Drive was performed on theatre stage during the Global Express in Iowa City, USA in 2014.

His latest book Kanakotsame: In My Times, a collection of short English stories, was launched in 2015. In September/October 2015 he was a Writer of the Month in Ghana. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing from Rhodes University where he is currently a doctoral candidate. In 2014 Mokae was a writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa, where he was also awarded honorary fellowship. He is a creative writing lecturer at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, South Africa.

Gontse Wa Chaane born and raised in Mamelodi ya Tshwane, is a poet and author based in Kimberley Northern Cape. Her poetry collection Black Diamond Wife was launched in August 2014. Other poetry has been published in various anthologies including There is a Place. She’s also penned Discovering Your History, a children’s biography on literary giant Sol Plaatje, and The Story of Garamatale, documenting the history of the Batlhaping people of Schmidtsdrift, removed from their land in 1968 during the apartheid era in South Africa.
